Surface-Prep Innovations

SMITH innovations

From automatic depth controllers to assure consistent surface-prep profiles, to front-wheel jacks for easy FS351 loading, these are just two of the many innovations SMITH is working on to help make your hard removal work faster and easier.

Remove Markings, NOT the Road

Come and observe SFO airfield maintenance operations remove markings with the SMITH X3 at the Airfield Symposium. The X-series erasers are a better way to remove markings without surface damage. We can prove it to you!

From automatic depth controllers for consistent surface-prep profiles and HEPA Dust collectors, to front-wheel jacks for easy FS351 loading, SMITH surface-prep innovations help to make your hard removal work faster and easier.

 Sidewalk Trip Abatement Innovation

Grinding down trip hazards on sidewalks is hard work. The new AES depth control actuator assures accurate cut depths for whatever you are grinding. Adding this accessory will produce consistent finishes and increase cutter life. When you attach the SMITH Sulky driver to your SPS10 with AES, the chore of removal is now easier. Of course, unlike this municipality that elected not to use a dust collector, SMITH always recommends using a HEPA vacuum to contain all airborne dust during removal.

Pavement Preservation Innovation

Getting consistent surface finishes use to be an art. Now anyone can achieve the right SP finish with the AES depth controller. With a simple push of the button, you will automatically remove in the “cutter impact zone” for perfect finishes and longer cutter life. Ask your SMITH Representative about pre-ordering an AES with your new SMITH LNX8. Don’t forget to attach a SMITH Sulky Power Driver to your walk-behinds for fast, easy, and effective removal.

Transport Innovation

Moving the FS351 on and off your work trucks used to be a chore. We developed a handy front wheel jack to make the transport of your SMITH FS351 faster and easier.
If you own an FS351 self-propelled scarifier, planer or shaver, consider ordering this transport innovation.
If you have an idea for an innovation or need assistance with your operation, please share them with us here.

Airmark Thermoplastic Removal at Airports

Thursday, May 18th, 2017

The X-Series pavement marking erasers were use to remove Airmark flame applied thermoplastic pavement markings on the tarmac at the Fort Lauderdale International Airport during an airfield marking symposium.

The Ennis-Flint AirMark marterial is a durable preformed thermoplastic pavement marking material for airside use at Part 139 and GA Airports.

Typically, scrapers and torches are a laborious method to remove this type of gummy, difficult to remove material. Water blasters available at airports are unable to remove Airmark on asphalt without damaging the asphalt surface.  Common drum-style scarifiers and planer machines are ineffective and create deep surface grooves.

The SMITH X-series Erasers are combination rotating scrapers that lift up and move the materials to the side and not into the pavements like drum-style grinders.  Although the removal took 4X longer than traditional paint markings, the materials were removed without having to hand scrape or flame torch the surface.

The equipment consisted of an X3 rotary eraser with MV5500 HEPA vacuum outfitted on a Bobcat Toolcat supplied by Burnie Carstens with Bobcat of Broward. A sit down LNX8 Eraser with automatic depth controls driven by an SR25 Sulky.

The airport appreciated that the final surface was preserved and appeared as if no markings were ever applied.  The surface was left in a profiled SP5 roughness similar to the outlying areas of the untouched tarmac. The SP5 profile is ideal for re-applying preformed thermoplastic markings on this type of asphalt surface. The following day, a new Airmark pavement marking will be applied by Ennis-Flint.
